As one of the most respected medical schools in the country, OSU College of Medicine attracts a very diverse group of students, and the women in the college are no exception. This year, at second look day WIM decided to hold a breakfast meeting for the female applicants and their friends and family. In preparation for the event, we took a survey of the first and second year female medical students, to get a better understanding of the types of women that choose to come to OSU. What we found was that we are serious about our medical careers while at the same time we balance life and relationships successfully. 32% of the med 1's and med 2's are either married or engaged, 21% of us are single, and 3% of us have children. Our areas of interest in medicine include specialties such as surgery, urology, dermatology, OB/GYN and neurology among others. One of us was a professional dancer before attending medical school, another was an archaeologist who did work in Peru and Turkey and another got her Ph.D. We have studied abroad in countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica and the Samoan Islands, we have been volunteer fire fighters, EMT's and we have worked with refugee children. We have done research at such institutions as the NIH, Johns Hopkins University, and the Cleveland Clinic. We come from 61 different undergraduate institutions and have 36 different majors ranging from biology to the classics, and we range in age from 19 to 36. We each have something unique to contribute to our classmates, both male and female. It is this diversity that makes OSUCOM the excellent institution that it is.
